General Questions
Who is the creator of this system?
The official Battling Ropes® System was created John Brookfield, who has been a leader in the strength and fitness world for many years. John is a highly respected strong man and is known around the globe for his amazing feats of strength and endurance. He has appeared on a variety of television shows like "Regis and Kathie Lee", "The Today Show", and "Good Morning America" just to name a few. He has also been featured in "Ripley's Believe It Or Not" and the "Guinness Book of World Records", as well as several publications including "MMA Sports", "Fighters Only" and "The Washington Post".
John created this system and was using and developing it for his own training needs. John basically created the foundation of the Battling Ropes® from the concept of a hurricane where the constant flow of the waves gave him the idea to create a series of waves with the ropes. Since this unique system was created, it has exploded around the world. They say "imitation is the best form of flattery" and this rings true with John's system, but there's only one Battling Ropes® System and you can't get John's wealth of knowledge and years of training experience with copycats. The imitators just point to the fact that John's training system WORKS and the results speak for themselves!
Why is the Battling Ropes® training system different from other training systems?
The Battling Ropes® System is unlike any other training method due to the non-momentum effect. For example, with other methods such as barbells, dumbbells and kettlebells gravity takes over as the weight goes back towards the ground. During this time when gravity takes over, momentum is used which gives the body and mind a chance to relax. With the Battling Ropes® training, velocity is used and must be maintained throughout the training. This forces the user to train or compete at a higher level of intensity which will last for longer durations of time.
It's a worldwide phenomenon! This partial list includes just some of the people using the ropes. The ropes have been seen on the reality show "The Biggest Loser" as well as nationwide TV commercials and more! They are also being used by Professional MMA fighters, trainers & coaches, Strength & Conditioning coaches, RKC Kettlebell Instructors, CrossFit Trainers, Olympic Wrestling & Judo Gold Metal Champions, NFL, High school & College Football Teams, Fire Fighters, Police Officers, SWAT, Personal Fitness Trainers, Highland Games & Stone Lifting Champions, Martial Arts Black Belt Champions, U.S. Military (Army, Marines & Special Forces), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Champion, Bally Fitness Trainers, Physical Therapists, The handicap & wheel chair bound, Power Lifting/Body Building Champions, Men & women for general fitness/weight loss, Youth Athletes & YMCA....and many more people!
Are there different concepts to the training system?
Yes, there are actually seven different elements and concepts to the Battling Ropes® System. The first concept is maintaining velocity which is the sustaining of the waves with the ropes. The second concept is the strength endurance phase which is the Pole System training. The other five methods have not been released yet but are in the works!
How long does it take to see results?
You will immediately enjoy and see the tremendous benefits of the training! However, velocity training is a missing link and will be very challenging. With some steady work and determination, your body will start to adjust to the velocity training and you will see results that will transfer into your sport or personal battlefield. Rope Questions
Why do the manila ropes smell?
All manila ropes are treated with a petroleum based material to stop them from molding and to keep bugs away during shipment & storage. Any smell or feeling will dissipate with use. Also, this is why we recommend that the manila rope be used outside, in a garage, or basement environment. Manila ropes do shed during use. Manila rope is the best rope for use on semi-abrasive surfaces. Using on this type of surface can still cause the rope to fray but it will hold up longer than the poly rope on this type of surface. Grass, dirt, or smooth concrete are the best surfaces to train on (NOT rough concrete or tar like a driveway).
I want to tie a knot to make it shorter to use in my basement. What is the best knot to use?
Anchor the rope at the length that you need then tie a simple slip knot and have the rest of the rope going out the back side of the anchor.
The 1.5” 50 ft. rope is the best rope to start with for general physical preparedness & conditioning. The benefits of training with this rope are as follows: Increased muscular & strength endurance (work capacity & sustained power/velocity), Increased cardiovascular endurance, Great for warm up & cool down, Helps remove blood lactate (lactic acid build up), Builds mental toughness, Great for core training (when done properly), Trains & balances both sides of the body, Can be used for foot work & balance drills (i.e. lunges, Bosu, jumping jacks, stability discs, etc.), Can be used by beginners, intermediate or advanced by varying rope length or by adding training complexes, Develops basic grip strength, Good for rehab or working around an injury, Weight loss/fat burning, Develops balance & rootedness, Can be used for modified partner training (16.5 ft. ropes are best for this). The 2” 50 ft. rope is best for specific or specialty physical preparedness and athletic conditioning: Intermediate & advanced or for larger, heaver athletes, Power & explosive training (short duration), Extreme mental toughness, Great for core training, Advanced grip training (grappling or racket sports), Used by NFL and MMA Pro’s, Develops balance & rootedness, Develops strength, Can be used for Pole Training System (100 ft. rope is best length), Best for conditioning test (Tsunami)
What rope would you suggest for someone just starting out?
Our standard rope is the 50 ft. 1.5" poly. This is the perfect rope for most people new to rope training. It is challenging enough for those who are already fit, but it's also just right for women, children and those who might be less fit. The 2” 50 ft. rope and 16.5 ft. partner ropes create a more challenging workout for the more advanced user or athlete. Start with the 50 ft. 1.5" and move on to the 2" when you feel you need more of a challenge!
What is the difference between the Poly and Manila ropes?
The poly ropes are synthetic braided polyester ropes which are water resistant and made for long life and durability. They do not shed fibers and are perfect for inside use where you don't want the shedding such as a gym or basement, but can be used outside as well. This is the recommended rope for Pole (pulling) System training. All poly ropes feature a plastic boot on each end to prevent fraying. The traditional manila ropes are like the ones people use to climb in gym class. They are durable, however since they are a natural fiber they do not last as long as the poly ropes. Also, they do shed some fibers. They are good for outside training or training in a garage if you don't mind cleaning up a bit. These ropes now also feature a polymer end cap to prevent fraying.
Why do you mainly use 50 ft. ropes?
The standard rope for the Battling Ropes® Velocity System is a 50 ft. 1.5". This came about after much research. The 50 ft. allows someone to progress properly through the system and continue to get results. Also, we start younger athletes on the standard 50 ft. ropes due to the visual motivation factor. For example, if you have a 14 year old female athlete who can't roll the wave or waves all the way to the end, she has visual motivation and can see what the goal is. After a few workouts she can see her waves getting stronger and going farther. This, of course, is very motivating and forces her to work harder.
What are the 100 ft. ropes used for?
The 100 ft. ropes are used for the Pole System, which is the strength endurance phase of the system.
By adding a partner to your rope training, you double the difficulty and result due to the added partner resistance. Both you and your partner work simultaneously. Partner rope training will also increase your balance and your base while helping you and your partner to develop the ability to change your movement and direction of your arms dynamically. This training will increase your hand speed, coordination, grip strength, timing, and muscular & cardiovascular endurance. When you order partner ropes you receive two (2) ropes both measuring 16.5 ft. in length and available in either 1.5" or 2" sizes.
Rope Maintenance
If the fraying is small and interfering with your training then you can melt it with a heat gun or direct flame. If it is a larger fray then I would cut it off using a razor blade knife. Use care when burning the rope because it can melt it and leave a hard area on the rope, which does not affect the Wave training but can affect the Pole training. If it's a small fray and is not interfering with your training, the best thing to do is just leave it alone.
